The Long Island Museum Presents
Childe Hassam:
An American Impressionist on Long Island
October 4, 2008 - February 22, 2009 |
From the summer of 1898 until his death in 1935, Childe Hassam enjoyed an association with East Hampton. This sleepy south fork village would inspire him to portray in paintings and prints, gardens and old houses; meadows and beaches; still lifes and nudes. Hassam was a pioneer of American Impressionism.
By the time he came to East Hampton, Hassam was already famous for his New York scenes and much of the work he produced on Long Island was done as an escape from the overwhelming city. He referred to East Hampton as “a beautiful little town with its wide main street” and his idyllic scenes are sometimes a major statement about the encroaching suburban development. Many of the locales are instantly recognizable and provide a complete record of the country lanes and colonial era homes of East Hampton during the first quarter of the 20th century. |
 |
This exhibition will explore one of the most productive periods of Hassam’s career and will include all of the nearly 35 etchings he produced in and around East Hampton. Oil paintings, watercolors and other works, as well as photographs and a documentary film of the artist at work will complete the show. Childe Hassam: An American Impressionist on Long Island is sponsored by Astoria Federal Savings.
